INDORE: A migrant worker was forced to sell one of his bulls, and yoked himself to a cart so that his family wouldn’t have to walk in this scorching heat as they made their way home.
Rahul, who worked as a daily labourer in Mhow, pulled the cart – and his family — for 25km on Agra-Mumbai national highway on Tuesday.
A video of Rahul pulling the cart with another bull on the yoke went viral – another shocking reminder of the plight of migrants in lockdown.
With jobs vanishing, his family was on the verge of starvation, he said. Out of options, they decided to return to their home in Indore’s Nayata Mundla locality.
Rahul said he was forced to sell one of his bulls dirt-cheap and decided to pull the cart himself. “I sold it for Rs 5,000. It would have easily fetched Rs 15,000 during regular days,” he said. Piling their meagre possessions on the cart, they set off.
Silawat asks collector to help cart puller
I used to work in Mhow but jobs became scarce. I am returning to my home in Indore. My brother and sister-inlaw are riding the cart because they got tired of walking,” he told mediapersons on the way.
Rahul said his father and sister had walked ahead, while he was “slowed down” by the burden.
Minister Tulsi Silawat said he had asked the district collector to help Rahul and his family. “Officials have been told to find out why such a situation arose,” he said, adding that the administration is trying to trace the family.
